Freedom vs Security: I Choose Freedom

This past week, U.S. authorities announced a “new” anti-terrorism tool that will be used on a trial basis at the airport in Phoenix, AZ. Essentially, it is an x-ray that can look beneath clothing thereby revealing everything that is underneath. It is not new technology, but had yet to be implemented in the U.S due to “privacy concerns.” It is thought that the technology will be available in several U.S. cities by the end of 2007.
Now, for the record, I am not an anarchist, a terrorist, a revolutionary or a rebel of any type. However, I DO NOT WANT JOE BLOW AIRPORT SECURITY TO HAVE THE ABILITY AND POWER TO LOOK UNDER MY CLOTHES! Ever!
Now, I know there are already strip searches that are done, as well as the less invasive pat-downs and such, but this is different. The technology is made so that the “naughty bits” are blurred, and the image is viewed by a security guard in a remote location. Also, the image cannot be saved, so it disappears when the person leaves the machine. I fully understand that this technology, if used properly and responsibly, is but a baby step from where we already are. But where so we draw the line? When do we stand up and say that we are NOT going to allow any more invasions of privacy. For me, the line is here and now.
The Romans went from a democratic republic to a dictatorship because of fear of war. The populace allowed the ruler (Octavian) to become a dictator, thereby giving up their right to vote. The government can only restrict our rights and invade our privacy if we let them. Obviously, I’m not advocating violence, rebellion, or whatever. However, complacency is akin to approval. I haven’t even figured out what I can do to express my disapproval. I am but an impoverished student who will not be flying to Arizona anytime soon. Maybe my contribution is spreading the word via my pathetic excuse for a blog. But if this is all I have, I will use it the greatest effect.
And now, a few words by Ben Franklin:
